What is Free POS Software? |
|
|
|
| Do a web search for "POS Software" and you'll also see a number of links for
"Free POS Software". What's the difference? Let's start with the definition of
what POS means. POS stands for Point Of Sale. This is a rather broad definition
that can include merchandising aids, displays and the methods used to enable
transactions. In our case, we're talking about the hardware and software that
runs both the front counter and back office operations of a business.
Most software companies offer trial versions of their products and in most cases
that is what you'll see advertised as "Free POS Software". Trial versions are
usually limited in a way that makes them unsuitable for actual use in a
business. One notable exception would be AveraSell, the free POS software
offered by POSitive Software.
AveraSell really is free POS software and will do a very good job of creating
invoices, tracking inventory, generating purchase orders and printing barcoded
labels. AveraSell will even process credit cards and manage the inventory on a
e-commerce web site. Unlike trial versions, AveraSell has no limit on the number
of inventory items or transactions that can be handled, but there are other
limitations users must be aware of:
- AveraSell is available by download only
- AveraSell is designed to run on a single computer
- Technical support is available for a fee
